In addition to providing nutrition, seafoods like clams, mussels, and crabs are culturally important to Indigenous well-being through connections to land, water, animals, family, nation, and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Photo-2.-Metlakatla-community-clam-harvest.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Photo-2.-Metlakatla-community-clam-harvest-884x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5025\" width=\"442\" height=\"512\"\/><\/a><figcaption>First Nations Health Authority Population Health and Wellness<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Clam gardens use traditional farming and harvesting methods. Archaeologists have detected evidence of clam garden sites in some communities that date back thousands of years. First Nation community bonds and connections are strengthened by participating in harvests, preparing foods, using traditional family recipes, and eating together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Metlakatla-community-clam-harvest.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Metlakatla-community-clam-harvest.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5026\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Metlakatla community clam harvest<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our changing climate and human activities increasingly threaten these seafood sources.<\/strong> For example, naturally occurring marine biotoxins and bacteria like <em>Vibrio <\/em>are found more often with rising global temperatures and can lead to seafoods becoming unsafe to eat.<br><br>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bccdc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">BC Centre for Disease Control<\/a> (BCCDC) is partnering with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fnha.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">First Nations Health Authority<\/a> (FNHA) on an Indigenous led project called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fnha.ca\/Documents\/FNHA-Watch-Project-Fact-Sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">WATCH<\/a>. WATCH<em>, or <\/em><strong>We All Take Care of the Harvest, is a seafood and climate change project focusing on shellfish and other seafoods.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WATCH Gathering-Spring Update 2021\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iT3e-1kkTDg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>WATCH Gathering-Spring Update 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Four different First Nation pilot communities are participating in this project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Metlakatla (North Coast),<\/li><li>Malahat (southeast Vancouver Island),<\/li><li>Klahoose (Discovery Islands and adjacent fjords), and<\/li><li>Tseshaht (Port Alberni area and west coast Vancouver Island).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Shellfish-blog-Photo-3.-Pilot-Communities-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Shellfish-blog-Photo-3.-Pilot-Communities-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5028\" width=\"512\" height=\"512\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Pilot Communities<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For communities to prepare and adapt to our changing global climate, they need to assess threats by looking at their seafood diets and local environmental conditions where seafood species live. During a planning phase, the traditional ecological knowledge of communities will be shared along with evidence-based learnings to understand the factors and health dangers linked to eating seafoods. For instance, in Washington State, tribal nations and researchers have learned that eating razor clams contaminated with low doses of one type of marine toxin, domoic acid, can lead to memory loss.<br><br>WATCH is consulting local and international experts in marine science, ecology, climatology, Indigenous fishery managers, public health, phytoplankton monitoring, marine virology, satellite imagery, regulators, laboratory methods, social scientists, and others to provide guidance on creating and optimizing monitoring and surveillance for seafoods.&nbsp;<br><br>In the monitoring phase that has started this year, communities are learning how to identify phytoplankton species\u2014microscopic algae\/plants\u2014that produce marine biotoxins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Photo-4.-Phytoplankton-species.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Photo-4.-Phytoplankton-species.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5029\" width=\"392\" height=\"319\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Phytoplankton species that cause paralytic, amnesic and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (PSP, ASP and DSP). Currently, access to biotoxin testing is limited because it is expensive and under-resourced in First Nation\u2019s shellfish harvesting areas. Monitoring will allow the pilot communities to decide for themselves when seafoods are safe to consume and allow them to communicate to their members when it is not a safe time to harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Photo-5.-Tina-Wesley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Photo-5.-Tina-Wesley.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5030\" width=\"442\" height=\"248\"\/><\/a><figcaption> Tina Wesley, Klahoose First Nation viewing phytoplankton blooms in her community<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BCCDC&#8217;s Environmental Health Services team<\/strong> (Lorraine McIntyre: food and shellfish safety specialist, Kathleen Mclean: environmental scientist and data, mapping guru, Mike Lee: epidemiologist, and others) are assisting the project by improving existing resources, such as our <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/maps.bccdc.ca\/shellfish\/\" target=\"_blank\">shellfish harvesting map<\/a>, to make it easier for people to identify what shellfish harvesting areas are closed for shellfish harvests. We are including pilot communities into our <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bccdc.ca\/health-professionals\/professional-resources\/sea-surface-temperatures-map\" target=\"_blank\">sea surface temperature maps<\/a> used to trend temperatures in shellfish harvesting areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Photo-6.-Example-sea-surface-temperatures.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Photo-6.-Example-sea-surface-temperatures-1024x597.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5031\" width=\"512\" height=\"299\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Example sea surface temperatures in Saanich inlet mapped for Malahat Nation<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>BCCDC is also preparing evidence reviews to identify health issues linked to traditional seafood diets and climate change impacts on seafoods.<br><br>When shellfish poisonings occur, it can be life-threatening. People who consume shellfish contaminated with saxitoxins, the toxin that causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, may require immediate medical intervention. This odorless toxin isn\u2019t destroyed by cooking, and you can\u2019t tell if it\u2019s in shellfish, which is why it\u2019s so important to harvest in safe areas.<br><br>We are working closely with our colleagues at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BC Drug and Poison Information Centre<\/a> to improve surveillance for calls about seafood poisonings so we can alert regulators and public health.
