{"id":1707,"date":"2021-06-15T21:57:31","date_gmt":"2021-06-15T21:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bccdcfound.wpengine.com\/whats-new\/indigenous-health-and-rights-time-for-a-healing-way-forward\/"},"modified":"2024-02-16T22:38:59","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T22:38:59","slug":"indigenous-health-and-rights-time-for-a-healing-way-forward","status":"publish","type":"our-resources","link":"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/resources\/indigenous-health-and-rights-time-for-a-healing-way-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Health and Rights: Time for a Healing Way Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Trigger warning: this blog contains information that may be difficult to read<\/em><br><br><em>National Residential School Crisis Line: 1-866-925-4419;<\/em> <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irsss.ca\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society<\/a><\/em><br><br>This blog post must begin with a caveat. We are settlers and acknowledge our organization is a part of a larger ecosystem with roots in colonialism. We can only speak as allies to, and partners with, Indigenous communities. We do not and cannot speak on behalf of Indigenous people, and we cannot understand the extent and depth of harms and the violation of rights caused by colonization and ongoing systemic racism.<br><br>But, that doesn\u2019t mean we shouldn\u2019t speak or act.<br><br>What we can do, humbly, is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\tAcknowledge our role as settlers, the gaps in our knowledge, and our commitment to learning and growing<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\tEncourage learnings and dialogue<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\tWork to address health inequities and improve health outcomes with Indigenous people<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\tAdvocate for the role that we all must play in truth and reconciliation<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\tRaise awareness and generate conversation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting in 1831, and for more than 150 years,&nbsp;over <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nctr.ca\/education\/teaching-resources\/residential-school-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis children<\/a> were taken from their families to attend church-run schools. They were abused, and forced to assimilate, and their culture, languages, and diversity were stripped away. Many families didn\u2019t know where their children were; many children never returned. <strong>This is just one horror of colonization in Canada.<\/strong><br><br>June is National Indigenous History Month. Just a few days prior to the start of this month, to commemorate the history, heritage, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and&nbsp;M\u00e9tis&nbsp;peoples in Canada, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/tk-eml\u00faps-te-secw\u00e9pemc-215-children-former-kamloops-indian-residential-school-1.6043778\" target=\"_blank\">215 undocumented remains of children<\/a>, some as young as three years old, were uncovered at the former residential school in Kamloops, BC, on the lands of Tk&#8217;emlups te Secw\u00e9pemc First Nation. <strong>This is not history. This is now.<\/strong><br><br>Residential schools and other harms of colonialism have led to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ccnsa-nccah.ca\/docs\/context\/FS-OverviewAbororiginalHealth-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">health and socioeconomic disparities, poorer health outcomes, and a profound impact on the health of Indigenous people<\/a>. <strong>And systemic Indigenous-specific racism is evident in Canada today.<\/strong><br><br>In November 2020, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/613\/2020\/11\/In-Plain-Sight-Summary-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous-specific Racism and Discrimination in BC Health Care<\/a> was released. This review finds multiple examples of racism and discrimination, and demonstrates widespread systemic racism within the BC health care system.<br><br>Racism and colonialism will continue to impact past, current, and future generations. Systemic racism will continue to perpetuate harms to Indigenous people.<br><br>We can see the impacts today in the overdose crisis and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fnha.ca\/about\/news-and-events\/news\/first-nations-toxic-drug-deaths-doubled-during-the-pandemic-in-2020\" target=\"_blank\">disproportionate numbers of First Nations people who are dying<\/a>.<br><br>Yet, there are examples of steps toward progress:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\tBeginning in 2007, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission undertook work that culminated in a final report in 2015 with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca\/eng\/1524494530110\/1557511412801\" target=\"_blank\">94 calls to action<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\tIn 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted&nbsp;the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/socdev\/unpfii\/documents\/DRIPS_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)<\/a> as a framework for reconciliation. In November 2019, BC became the first jurisdiction in Canada to formally adopt the internationally-recognized standards in the UNDRIP by making it law in the <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/declaration.gov.bc.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act<\/a><\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\tFormed in 2013, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fnha.ca\" target=\"_blank\">First Nations Health Authority (FNHA)<\/a> is the first and only provincial health organization of its kind in Canada to provide leadership and culturally-safe practices to improve health outcomes for First Nations people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is much more to be done.<br><br>Our goal of health equity will not come to fruition if we don\u2019t take responsibility and build partnerships with Indigenous communities. One such partnership is Compassion, Inclusion, &amp; Engagement (CIE), a program created between the BC Centre for Disease Control and the FNHA, that empowers people with lived and living experience of substance use (peers) to take action and stop overdose in their community. Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnha.ca\/about\/news-and-events\/news\/first-nations-toxic-drug-deaths-doubled-during-the-pandemic-in-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Nations people represent only 3.3% of BC&#8217;s population, yet in 2020 they died at 5.3 times the rate of other BC residents<\/a>, the work peers do through CIE is critical in saving lives.<br><br>Indigeneity is a social determinant of health, as is racism\u2014we must better address the social determinants of health for all communities. We can learn a great deal from Indigenous culture and wellbeing, that puts holistic health, wellness, and self-determination at its core, recognizing the importance of balanced inter-relationships between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. This perspective reflects a wonderful view of how we can articulate positive health, and create healthier humans, families, and communities. <strong>This perspective reflects our goal to put the healthy human at the core of everything we do.<\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnha.ca\/wellness\/wellness-for-first-nations\/first-nations-perspective-on-health-and-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/FNPOW.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4962\" style=\"width:332px;height:316px\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: First Nations Perspective of Wellness, First Nations Health Authority<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We must work today, and for the future, on the hard truths and the vital reconciliations\u2014we must work toward healing. And through our collective commitment to Activate Health, we can do this together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\t<strong>Learn<\/strong>: about residential schools, diverse cultures, wellbeing and traditional healing, and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\" target=\"_blank\">lands on which you live, work, and play<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\t<strong>Read<\/strong>: see below for a few resources as a starting point.<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\t<strong>Act<\/strong>: understand the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action, eliminate stigma, acknowledge the role of colonization and use decolonizing language, address racism when you see it, talk to elected officials, friends, and family.<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\t<strong>Support<\/strong>: community organizations, Indigenous-owned businesses, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bccdcfoundation.org\/help-put-an-end-to-bcs-overdose-crisis-support-peers-on-the-frontlines\/\" target=\"_blank\">CIE<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\t<strong>Be meaningful<\/strong>: use <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/resources\/territory-acknowledgement\/\" target=\"_blank\">land acknowledgments<\/a> but make them personal and avoid tokenism, build self-awareness and your own intentions, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XEzjA5RoLv0\" target=\"_blank\">use the right terms<\/a> and people-first language.<\/li>\n\n\n<li\n\t class=\"fndry-list-item\">\n\t<strong>Celebrate and commemorate<\/strong>: June 21<sup>st<\/sup> is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/irshdc.ubc.ca\/2020\/06\/16\/celebrate-national-indigenous-peoples-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Indigenous Peoples Day<\/a> and September 30, 2021 is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangeshirtday.org\" target=\"_blank\">Orange Shirt Day<\/a>. Mark these occasions respectfully (and safely, per COVID-19 protocols) and show your commitment to Indigenous rights and support for residential school survivors and their communities.   <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We commit that to Activate Health we must also take these steps, foster diversity, address racism, and prioritize equity and social justice in our public health programs and activities. <br><br>Our place in this ecosystem means we have a responsibility to challenge the status quo, and to play a role in a way forward that breaks the cycles of racism and harm.<br><br>This great responsibility falls on all of us and the time is now.
