{"id":1658,"date":"2021-04-19T23:56:49","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T23:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bccdcfound.wpengine.com\/whats-new\/vaccine-hesitancy-foe-of-healthy-communities\/"},"modified":"2024-02-16T22:44:17","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T22:44:17","slug":"vaccine-hesitancy-foe-of-healthy-communities","status":"publish","type":"our-resources","link":"https:\/\/pacificpublichealth.ca\/resources\/vaccine-hesitancy-foe-of-healthy-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"Vaccine Hesitancy: Foe of Healthy Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of the biggest successes in the history of public health was the introduction of vaccines.<br><br>The advent of vaccines and immunization programs have been a fundamental factor in the health of our societies, and reflect a vital <a href=\"https:\/\/bccdcfoundation.org\/prevention-101-decoding-public-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">primary prevention<\/a> tactic.<br><br>Vaccines protect us from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bccdc.ca\/health-info\/disease-types\/vaccine-preventable-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vaccine-preventable diseases (diseases caused by certain viruses and bacteria)<\/a>, and essential to this protection is <a href=\"https:\/\/immunizebc.ca\/ask-us\/questions\/what-herd-immunity-or-community-immunity-covid-19-how-does-it-happen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">herd or community immunity<\/a>, acquired when most of a population is protected from a disease. This means that <strong>it\u2019s not just up to us as individuals to get our vaccines for ourselves, it\u2019s up to us to be vaccinated so we can protect our populations.<\/strong><br><br>Now, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), one of the biggest threats to modern public health is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/spotlight\/ten-threats-to-global-health-in-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vaccine hesitancy: the reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccines<\/a>. In fact, in 2019 <strong>the WHO listed vaccine hesitancy in the top ten threats to global health<\/strong>, stating that vaccine hesitancy \u201cthreatens to reverse progress made in tackling vaccine-preventable diseases.\u201d<br><br>What drives vaccine hesitancy?<br><br>Factors include: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/healthy-living\/canadian-immunization-guide-part-1-key-immunization-information\/page-5-communicating-effectively-immunization.html#p1c4a1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lack of understanding about the vaccine, immunizations in general, or severity and incidence of vaccine preventable diseases;\u00a0perceived risk of serious adverse events; and sociocultural beliefs.<\/a><br><br>Also, vaccine hesitancy is driven significantly by <a href=\"https:\/\/bccdcfoundation.org\/addressing-the-infodemic-everyone-must-play-a-role-in-stopping-mis-and-disinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misinformation and disinformation<\/a>\u2014another major threat to our health. What we share online, in discussions with family and friends, and in our workplaces spreads information widely, and <strong>it is very important that what we are sharing is accurate and evidence-based.<\/strong> Otherwise, we risk increasing incorrect knowledge, assumptions, and fear.<br><br>The opposite of vaccine hesitancy is <strong>vaccine confidence<\/strong>. This is what we must strive for today, in relation to COVID-19 vaccines in particular, and every day for all vaccines. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/vaccinate-with-confidence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vaccine confidence<\/a> means that we have trust in vaccines, providers, and vaccine development.<br><br>We now have four approved COVID-19 vaccines for use in Canada. For the vaccination program to be successful, we need a majority <a href=\"https:\/\/immunizebc.ca\/ask-us\/questions\/what-herd-immunity-or-community-immunity-covid-19-how-does-it-happen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(estimated to be at least 70%)<\/a> of our population to get immunized. As these vaccines are new, it\u2019s understandable that people have questions and want their concerns addressed. The vaccines are novel, and we need to better understand how they work in the real-world\u2014keeping in mind this does not mean they are unsafe or risky.<br><br><strong>Gathering evidence-based information, speaking to health professionals, understanding the presence of, and avoiding, mis- and disinformation, and using critical thinking can resolve questions and alleviate concerns.<\/strong><br><br>The internet can be a great resource but <strong>make sure the sites you visit are reputable, trustworthy, and scientifically-sound<\/strong>; here\u2019s some <a href=\"https:\/\/immunize.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/Resource%20and%20Product%20Uploads%20(PDFs)\/Products%20and%20Resources\/General%20Public\/Information%20Sheet\/Immunization%20Information%20on%20the%20Internet\/2017\/imm_info_internet_2017_e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tips<\/a> for what to watch out for online. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rntDSPjfL-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a> offers a quick and clear summary of our COVID-19 vaccines, including the risks of not getting one. Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/immunize.ca\/questions-and-answers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">facts<\/a>: vaccines work, vaccines are safe, vaccines save lives.<br><br>Vaccine confidence will inspire more people to get vaccinated and will reduce illness, hospitalizations, and deaths caused by COVID-19\u2014this will bring us closer to the putting an end to this global pandemic.<br><br>Today we call on you to Activate Health by getting your COVID-19 vaccine (when eligible, if able); do your part, get your shot! Encourage your friends and family to do the same.<br><br>Share a photo of your vaccination on social media, tell your friends about the experience, and in general talk about the importance of these vaccines\u2014be a COVID-19 vaccine ambassador!<br><br>It is also important to understand, and respect, that some people can\u2019t get vaccines for certain reasons. This means that for those who can safely get vaccines, doing so is even more critical to ensure we protect others.
