During these unprecedented times, people are looking for ways to have fun, maintain a sense of normalcy, and make a difference. The Tarry family of Surrey did just that when they set up the BC Stay-at-Home Campout.

Under their own steam, they set up this simple, fun, and meaningful event: families sign up to participate in a campout at home (either in their backyards, in their homes) to raise awareness about staying home for everyone’s safety right now, and donate a minimum of $5 as their “camping fee” to raise funds for our Emergency Response Fund.

Their original plan was to raise $1,000 and campout on April 25. They managed to get over 120 families across BC involved, get media attention, and nearly quadrupled their goal and raised $3,905!

Because of its success, they’ve decided to organize another at-home campout on Saturday, May 16 and we want you to get involved!

Make your “camping fee” donation on their fundraising page here. You can also check out and join their Facebook group to see photos from the last campout, and read messages from the organizers and us to all participants.

Cooper and Piper Tarry, of Surrey BC, with their very good dog.

Are you going to participate in the next BC Stay-at-Home Campout? Let us know! Tag us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, @bccdcfoundation, and use the hashtag #bcstayathomecampout to join the conversation. Happy camping!

After the film, we’ll have a post-show Q&A with experts, including Dr David Patrick, Interim Executive Lead of the BC Centre for Disease Control, to continue the discussion and answer your questions. Join us to find out how our actions can keep antibiotics working and protect ourselves, our families, and our communities for generations.

For the third October in a row, we’re teaming up with Science World and the experts at the BC Centre for Disease Control to host a fun and fabulous adults-only event…that happens to be full of facts! The crew at Science World are cooking up a mystery for the public to solve, which can only be done with the help of the scientists and experts from the BC CDC! This year, it’s taking place on Friday, October 18th, but costumes, especially sci-fi, are encouraged, even though it’s not Halloween.

The theme for 2019 is at the same time historic and time sensitive, and…gasp! Someone might die! But that’s all we can tell you for now…you’ll have to follow us on social media @bccdcfoundation for more hints, tricks and treats in the coming weeks.

Tickets are on sale now through Science World. You won’t want to miss out on this one; be sure to get your tickets ASAP because this event sells out every year!

Ever wonder what public health means? What the heck is a Public Health Superhero? Join the BCCDC Foundation for Public Health in partnership with Science World for a free public event to demystify, debunk, and decode public health. Meet BC’s very own public health superheroes from the BC Centre for Disease Control, who work tirelessly to keep you healthy and prevent harm in our communities. Share your own health superhero stories and show off your best cape!

Moderated by BC’s Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry–basically BC’s Public Health Wonder Woman–this event will cover important topics like immunizations, sexual health, overdose crisis response, and the “how-to” of public health like laboratory work.

We’ll answer your most pressing questions with Q&A, and answer some of the questions you didn’t even know you had, like “what’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done in public health?” (hint: it has to do with the wrong end of a goat). Speakers include:

  • Dr. Bonnie Henry, moderator and BC Provincial Health Officer
  • Dr. Monika Naus, Medical Director of the Communicable Diseases & Immunization Services at BCCDC
  • Dr. Troy Grennan, physician lead for Provincial HIV/STI Program at BCCDC
  • Sara Young, Manager, Hepatitis and Harm Reduction Services at BCCDC
  • Dr. Agatha Jassem, Clinical Microbiologist & Program Head, Virology, BCCDC Public Health Laboratory.

Join the BCCDC Foundation for this event which will also be the launch of a new public health podcast series, and learn about the often-invisible work happening in our province that keeps you safe every day. Superhero attire encouraged!

Date: Wednesday, August 7th, 2019.

Time: 7:30-9:00 pm.

Location: Science Theatre, Telus World of Science, 1455 Quebec St, Vancouver.
