Another excellent Research Week has come to an end. Over 50 posters, two great keynote speakers, two great workshops and 12 presentations on research and innovation at the BCCDC!

The BCCDC Foundation was pleased to sponsor Research Week, as well as take an active role on the organizing committee. We believe it’s important for all the teams at the BCCDC to benefit from seeing the results of each other’s hard work, and that’s a big reason for having an annual research knowledge translation event. If you missed some of the presentations, we have them archived here.

As well, thank you to all of the 50 BCCDC volunteers who participated in the Zombie Outbreak fun event at Science World on the last day of Research Week. From all accounts, the attendees had a lot of fun, were really engaged, and learned a lot about stopping the spread of infectious disease.

The BCCDC has been hosting ‘Grand Rounds’, a series of knowledge translation sessions, with internal and external speakers and guests for over 15 years. This program is accredited as a Continuing Medical Education (CME) activity by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The BCCDC Foundation provided funding in 2013 to support an enhanced, interactive Rounds experience remotely via webcasting for end users at distant or remote sites. We also supported archiving of audio and video material on the BCCDC website, emphasizing the role of BCCDC as a trusted source of public health information.

This has resulted in being able to disseminate these educational topics and research findings to a wider audience and provide greater interaction, as remote viewers can ask questions live at the end of each session. The Foundation is pleased to have supported the initial funding to demonstrate the value and we are thrilled to now see that the program will continue to be supported as a vital function of the BCCDC.

The library of recorded Grand Rounds sessions, as well as the presentations given at Research Week since 2011, can be accessed here.

Two days of symposia presentations, plus two riveting keynote speakers, plus two great workshops, thirty posters and one reception equals an entire week celebrating BCCDC research.

The BCCDC Foundation for Public Health was proud to sponsor Research Week again this year, as well as host the reception. In a year when the topic was Public Health: Global Challenges, Local Solutions, it really brings home how vital local research being done in BC is when looking through a global lens.

If you are interested in viewing the symposia presentations, they have been recorded and you can watch them here.

Another great week is shaping up, guided by the theme Public Health: Global Challenges, Local Solutions.

Research Week is a fantastic opportunity for BCCDC researchers and professionals to learn about all the exciting and innovative research happening around the Centre, to enjoy some fun and educational workshops, and to socialize and often even build new collaborations. The BCCDC Foundation is very proud to be a part of Research Week, as a sponsor and as a member of the organizing committee, to offer the opportunity for everyone to gather and to showcase the cool things happening at BCCDC and in public health more broadly.

From October 19th to the 22nd, BCCDC held its eighth annual Research Week, with four days of activities including informational and fun workshops and a variety of research presentations, and about 200 people in attendance through the week. The BCCDC Foundation both sponsors and helps coordinate the Research Week initiative and this week was another great success!

IMG_0631RW 2015 Day 4 (Symposium 2) - 34 of 42

The theme was ‘The Evolution of Public Health’ and we had a very evolutionary series of activities. Our workshops ranged from computer tips and tricks, to healthy workplace activities such as snacks and desk yoga. Our symposia included two amazing keynotes that truly spoke to the array of public health research: from BCCDC we had Dr David Patrick who presented “UBC Complex Chronic Disease Study: How Do You Research a Syndrome?” and Dr Trevor Bedford joined us from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle Washington to bring us his work on “Real-time tracking of virus evolution”.

2015 RW Day 3 (Symposium 1) - 5 of 40RW 2015 Day 4 (Symposium 2) - 30 of 42

We also had ten short talks that varied from reducing pain during vaccine injections, to developing best practices for engaging peers in harm reduction, to climate change, drinking water and acute gastrointestinal illness, among other interesting snapshots of research activities – a truly amazing showcase of the diversity of work that occurs at BCCDC.

RW 2015 Day 4 (Symposium 2) - 9 of 42

Throughout the week, we had more than 40 posters displayed around the building for everyone to view. As a unique and fun activity, we collected feedback throughout the week by asking staff to answer “how would you ‘evolve’ our Centre?” and put their ideas in an envelope, some of which were shared at the end of the symposia and hopefully some will become reality!

RW 2015 Day 4 (Symposium 2) - 27 of 42RW 2015 Day 4 (Symposium 2) - 12 of 42

At the end of the week, the BCCDC Foundation hosted our second annual reception in celebration of Research Week, where we welcomed guests from BCCDC to join external partners for some food, drinks and networking. This year, the reception was sponsored by BCCDC/PHSA, demonstrating our genuinely collaborative and reciprocal relationship. Our other generous sponsors included The Lazy Gourmet, New Zealand Wine, and Blackcomb Aviation.  We would like to thank all our sponsors and our guests who joined us from many different organizations!

RW 2015 Day 4 (Symposium 2) - 39 of 42

A huge thank-you to the Research Week organizing committee, and to everyone who came out to Research Week 2015 and made the week a great success, an engaging experience and something to beat for 2016.

A final note from Sarah Henderson and Will Hsiao, Research Week Committee Co-Chairs, who said they are “really honoured to have been a part of organizing our last three Research Weeks at BCCDC, which have showcased, and brought together, the great work that is done here. We all know that BCCDC carries out service provision to the highest standard, and this best practice has only evolved through the continual feedback of research”!
