The BCCDC Foundation for Public Health (BCCDC Foundation) has been in a growth phase for the last several years, and we have seen incredible success. We are currently poised to undertake broader public health work that will help BC advance the health of our communities. It is becoming increasingly clear that we need strong public health programs, research, services, leadership, and advocacy for community health and societal well-being, and even more clear that public health investment is a prerequisite for positive health. A significant focus over the next few years will be to attract the necessary public health investment required for building and sustaining healthy and resilient communities.

Please visit our website for more information.

The Board’s Role

The Board is responsible for providing financial, legal, and risk oversight and working with the Executive Director on strategic direction, priority-setting, and high-level vision for the organization. Currently the Board is made up of eight directors, with three Officer roles: Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary

Director terms consist of three years, renewable once. In addition to the AGM, the Board of Directors meets four times a year, with ad hoc meetings as needed. Meetings are held in Vancouver or by Zoom, Monday-Fridays. It is expected that those interested will devote the time to being an engaged Director.

Board Director Opportunities

We are seeking a Director to join the Board, specifically to fill the Treasurer position. We are looking for a volunteer with the following skills and interests:

  • A commitment to supporting programs and projects that benefit the health of British Columbians, with a strong focus on equity.
  • Experience as Treasurer or in a relevant financial management position.
  • Knowledge of financial legislation and practices and non-profit compliance requirements.
  • Experience with audits, budgets, internal controls, tax returns, and financial reporting.
  • Understanding of Board governance and non-profit financial requirements.
  • Experience leading or working on committees.

The Treasurer duties are to:

  • Provide oversight to ensure the organization’s financial controls and financial records, reports and returns are maintained according to generally accepted accounting practices and principles to comply with the BC Societies Act and the Income Tax Act.
  • Review the annual operating budget with Executive Director before submission to the Board
  • Review quarterly financial reports with Executive Director before submission to the Board
  • Act as financial liaison between the Board and/or committees and the Executive Director including but not limited to advice on financial institutions, investment strategies, insurance, and risk management.
  • Serve as Chair of Finance and Audit Committee and review audited financial statements with auditors.
  • Review the board-governed finance policies and make recommendations to the Board as necessary.
  • Review financial matters as referred by the Board and/or committees and recommend appropriate action.

The Organization

The BCCDC Foundation for Public Health (BCCDC Foundation) works closely with the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and other public health stakeholders, to improve population and public health outcomes in BC. Established to protect and promote health, prevent harm, and prepare for threats by inspiring vision and philanthropy, the BCCDC Foundation envisions people living in healthy communities protected from infectious disease and environmental health hazards through innovative research and collaborative public health solutions.

As the philanthropic partner of the BCCDC, the BCCDC Foundation operates as a tax-exempt registered charity with its own Board and administration; as such, it is an arm’s length organization in place to work in partnership with the BCCDC and to support public health broadly. The BCCDC Foundation is modelled such that we can support public health in unique ways through fundraising, grants and awards, communications, knowledge translation, as well as public education and awareness. By convening, collaborating, and leveraging relationships with our partners to drive innovation that advances population and public health for British Columbians, we provide a value-add for the public health system in BC.

How to Apply

We believe in equity, diversity, and inclusion and that our Board should reflect the diversity of British Columbia and the communities we serve. We encourage applications from persons of all sexual orientations and genders, Indigenous persons, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, and others with the skills, knowledge, and passion to bring to our work.

Interested individuals are invited to submit a letter of application and CV to Lisa Young at Lisa.young1@bccdc.ca by January 7, 2022.
