The BCCDF Foundation for Public Health teamed up with Science World to host a murder mystery event for Halloween 2018!

Attendees were tasked with using science to solve the crime. they had just two hours to identify the killer, poison, how the poison was administered, and the motive.

“It is so much fun to see how enthusiastic attendees are to have access to our BCCDC folks and to use real science to solve a mystery, ” said Kristy Kerr, Executive Director of the BCCDC Foundation for Public Health. “I am thankful for our partnership with Science World and everyone who volunteers because it allows us to share that”

The event was set at a sci-fi fan convention and the BCCDC was there to warn attendees of something known as ConCrud, which is what happens when you pick up an infection or illness at a convention.

“Our partnership with Science World continues to produce rewarding and entertaining events, “said Dr. Mark Tyndall, Executive Medical Director of the BCCDC. “It is a great way to showcase the things that we do in a way that is easy to understand” These events provide unparalleled access to our science and the people who do the work. I am grateful to the BCCDC staff who participate and to the BCCDC Foundation for Public Health for their dedication to raising awareness about our work and public health.”

By participating in activities at the booths, participants could earn clues to help solve the mystery. Keenan Simmons, who attended the event with a group of about 10 friends, found it challenging. “You never know who [the killer] is, you’re not confident in your answer,” he said.

Julianne Beauchamp, another attendee and part o the same group as Simmons, was certain about the substance she identified as the poison. “It can kill you by injecting, touching or ingesting so there’s lots of ways he could have died,” she said.

About 1,200 people attended over the two-night event, held October 25 and 26. Some fans got right into the Halloween spirit and dressed up in costumes or as their favourite sci-fi characters.  “It was super fun I will come back next year,” said Beauchamp.

Carmond Ng, Treasurer

Carmond Ng is an associate with PwC Vancouver providing assurance services for private and public companies within the insurance, technology and life sciences industries. He is currently enrolled in the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP) and has just earned his MPAcc from the Edwards School of Business (University of Saskatchewan). Prior to accountancy, he received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioural Neuroscience from McMaster University and also worked at the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS as a clinical research assistant from 2009 to 2014. At his time here, Carmond conducted both research and clinical tests in molecular genetics for the benefit of patients with HIV or Hepatitis C.

Dr. Agatha Jassem and her team will be working on the Genomic Analysis of Influenza A Viruses by Target-Capture Sequencing project. This project will compare the performance of a novel next generation sequencing (NGS) technology for influenza subtyping to the current PCR subtyping method and Sanger sequencing that is practiced at BCCDC. NGS can be combined with a target-capture method for sequencing that produces more sensitive, accurate and comprehensive results to influenza detection and characterization. The research aims to improve assay technologies and as a result, advance influenza surveillance and diagnostics.

Dr. Mark Gilbert and his team will be working on formative research for a BC-specific STI and HIV personalized risk self-assessment (PRS) tool. The project recognizes the recent shift to online self-care in healthcare and the variety of existing PRS tools available.  Dr. Gilbert and his team will perform the groundwork research on the usability and acceptability of a PRS tool prototype designed using clinical predictive rules (CPRs) created by BCCDC and UBC researchers. The CPRs target individuals at high risk for sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STIBBI).  The aim of the project is to improve the current PRS tool to maximize its acceptability and effectiveness at promoting the uptake of STIBBI prevention strategies.

Dr. Roy Purssell and his team will be working on the Opioid Prescribing Evaluation and Research Activities (OPERA) project. In response to the recent public health emergency alert that was announced in February 2016 regarding the increase in illicit drug overdose deaths, the need for an evaluation of the current prevention and treatment for illicit drug users is apparent.  Dr. Purssell and his team will evaluate the association between the “supply side” interventions to decrease adverse drug events due to prescription opioids and accidental illicit drug overdose deaths. The aim of the project is to determine if the increase in illicit drug deaths is related to physicians prescribing smaller amounts of strong pain relievers (opioids).

Dr. Mark Tyndall and his team are working on developing a mobile application for data collection targeted for young adults. This project recognizes the gaps in research and surveillance data for young adults in BC and Canada due to changing patterns of technology and environment. As young adults are at a critical period to target for disease prevention and health promotion, Dr. Tyndall and his team are developing a novel engagement and data collection tool in the form of a mobile phone application that could help address a key national and provincial gap in research and surveillance for this demographic.  The project aims to develop and test feasibility, relevance and acceptability of a multi-platform mobile application for data collection from young adults that will work towards bridging this gap in research and surveillance.

Dr. Debra Kent and her team are working on a project integrating wildlife and environmental data for public health purposes. Due to reports of high levels of toxins in BC shellfish last summer, there is a concern for populations in BC that engage in self-harvesting of wild shellfish or consume large quantities of shellfish are at high risk of serious toxic exposures.  Dr. Kent and her team are developing a way to evaluate data collected on environmental factors, wildlife mortality events or unusual findings to use as indicators for potential public health risks.  The project includes a one-day workshop that brings together marine scientists, First Nation representatives, public health, provincial and federal stakeholders to explore the available sources of data and the most effective way to identify risks using the information available.

The BCCDC Foundation is proud to help BCCDC researchers through small grants that support projects advancing Public Health in BC. It is our goal at the BCCDC Foundation to enable researchers to obtain further support from other agencies. Dr Amee Manges will work on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene detection using metagenomics, addressing the need for novel ways to detect and prevent AMR, and testing whether fecal microbiota transplantation into Clostridium difficile-infected patients can eliminate or reduce the burden of other AMR bacteria in the gut. Drs Troy Grennan and Jason Wong will determine the efficacy and safety of daily doxycycline prophylaxis in preventing new syphilis cases, as well as other bacterial STIs, in high-risk, HIV-positive MSM, and the impact of doxycycline on rates of AMR. Dr Sarah Henderson, Dr Tom Kosatsky, and Lorraine McIntyre will undertake two projects on shellfish safety – one using environmental modelling to inform on shellfish bed closures, the other through a workshop that will enable public health and industry professionals to discuss specific mitigation strategies to address the risk of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in raw oyster consumers.

In the first systematic design study for reporting whole genome sequencing data in the public health microbiology domain, Dr Jenn Gardy will use the design study approach from the field of information visualization to create a one-page report that translates tuberculosis (TB) genomic data into an interpretable format to demonstrate the utility of this approach to clinical report design. In addition, Dr James Johnston, with Dr Gardy, will host a workshop to bring BC TB stakeholders together to develop and discuss the new process and reporting format for TB genotyping data to lead to faster, more appropriate patient care and TB cluster investigation. Dr Maureen Mayhew and team will target TB prevention toward those at risk by creating, testing and implementing a patient-centred web-tool that empowers patients by improving latent TB infection (LTBI) knowledge and reduces stigma, identifies personalized TB risk, and influences acceptance and completion of LTBI treatment.

Dr Jane Buxton, Ashraf Amlani, and the Peer Engagement and Evaluation Project (PEEP) team, which develops, implements and evaluates best practice guidelines for peer engagement for harm reduction programs and policies, will come together for a three-day meeting to validate qualitative analysis findings to enable their continued work in ensuring that everyone across BC has equal access to harm reduction services.

It is our goal to support BCCDC researchers with small grants to enable further peer-reviewed support from other agencies. We are excited to have been able to fund this number of diverse and innovative projects, and we look forward to some intriguing outcomes. Congrats to all and their teams!

Dr. Brunham, who is the former Executive and Scientific Director of the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, was integral in establishing the BCCDC Foundation in 2004, and in building it into a key partner of the BCCDC over the past decade. He remains an Advisory Member of the Board of Directors and we are lucky to have his expertise at our fingertips.

Dr Brunham is Head of the Vaccine Research Laboratory at the University of British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and is an international expert on infectious diseases and well known for his research on Chlamydia, SARS and HIV. He led BC’s response in the 2003 SARS crisis, as well as the avian influenza outbreak and the second wave of pandemic H1N1.

Dr Ogilvie’s award will enable improved access to high impact HIV prevention, treatment and care services for men who have sex with men in Rwanda and British Columbia by sharing methodologies to estimate the size of key populations most affected by HIV in both countries.

The goal of Dr Hoang’s project is to provide the foundation for a larger study that involves national and international collaborations to look at new engineered technologies to reduce the burden of healthcare-associated infections.

We hope these awards will assist Drs Ogilvie and Hoang in acquiring positive outcomes, and receiving further peer-reviewed support from other agencies. Congrats to both and their teams!
